Learning how to use podcasts, creating web pages and using digital media are something, but at the end of the day--even though the journalism industry is shifting from print to online--it is still imperative to maintain a strong foundation in journalism writing.

Although journalism is evolving, and changing from pen and paper to the worldwide web, we as journalist make mistakes. This is inevitable. the only thing we can do about is stick together, and make these mistakes together.

Terilyn said...

Stacy is right. Technology is changing journalism, but it is the same thing essentially. It's like the wrapping on a present. The present maintains its goodness in whatever wrapping you choose.

I agree with the "well-rounded" journalist angle Mashable takes. In a world which is going digital, this presentation not only a reminder of good journalism ethic but on advice of what to do and how to go about in the future. howevre since we err, this means there will also be mistakes and abuses in the electronic world.

To this day, journalism is constantly evolving. Now, the skills of a journalist are not simply look, listen, and write but much more. This evolution into "future journalism" may be inevitable but still, the old skills are the foundation and the base to build up into the other skills needed later on.

The future of journalism is leading towards the new trends of social media. This is something journalists should be embracing with open arms. Social media leads to a bigger audience therefore receiving more feedback, and makes news more available.

Rachel said...

So what if the journalism world is breaking away from print and finding better shelter in the digital media? Everything is still the same, just subtract the paper. Like what everybody else before me said, a the basic foundation of journalism is still needed. It is the same news being covered, just a differently way of presenting it.

With all the new advancements in technology, it is no surprise that everything is going digital, including news. And although this method is helpful, like using digital media, we can't give more importance to it. Because in the end, editing and using podcasts are not the first priority, it is still about the writing.

Journalistic ways are improving and evolving. The ways of journalism are changing, but are also a strong basis the technology world. We are a world of online casting, the future of journalism.

Journalism is always evolving. With the growing technological advancements, technology is definately going to effect journalism. Journalism is no longer simply just spreading the truth, it is how we spread the truth. By using technology, journalism is able to expand more. The future of journalism is no longer just the pen and a notepad.

I really like how it emphasizes the cross between traditional journalism and modern technology. I agree that as time goes on and technology advances, journalists should be able to utilize modern tools while still producing top-notch journalistic concepts. I also like how it includes the point that journalists should use social media to listen. Overall, I actually find this presentation inspiring, and it makes me want to be a better journalist, business-person, and tech-savvy individual.

Journalism and the new forms of reporting are changing every year. The inventions of new technology affect how journalist choose to report and write. Stories will always be stories but the way they are reported will continue to change. Although the new forms of reporting seem beneficial, there are always going to be flaw. So no matter what form is chosen, the story must be told

Unknown said...

Like everyone else is saying, technology in media changes throughout the years. Advances do benefit the news being delivered, but the way article writers write will always be the same. Technology provides a more stylistic kind of news, but it does not develop what journalist think and say.

Live podcast are very hepful. I got the chance to watch my dad on a live podcas when he went on to talk on a sacramento radio show. These different types of media only expand the way we can hear, read, or look at the news.

Even though incorporating technology in this day and age is a good thing, the ways of the past shouldn't be forgotten. Even though internet is popular nowadays, do mind that not everyone has that convenience. Printing should still play a role in journalism. I do like how the presentation said everyone should be well-rounded. Even though I don't think that everyone should have to know layouts, editing, etc, like to the fullest, it's good to know a little bit of each area, just in case.

Stefan said...

As technology advances, formats for journalism changes. The newspaper is a dying breed, as people would rather go on the internet and find out the same information, it's more convenient. However, no matter how much it changes, the goals should remain the same: Report the truth. As to whether this mantra will be maintained, only time will tell.

Journalism is constantly evolving like Pokemon. They keep evolving until it reaches the highest point. (right now its in its 2nd evolve form). It was like a caterpie evolving to a metapod. Instead of using pens and pencils we now use computers and recorders.

Unknown said...

I agree with Jackie. The presentation was well laid out. Journalism and Technology will always go hand in hand, so in order to be a future journalist one has to understand the concepts and fundamentals of technology as well as using that knowledge correctly.

Unknown said...

Although technology does have an impact on journalism in terms of changing from print publication to online publication, evolution is important for the future of journalism. Journalism used to be just pen and a notebook, but since social media became the center of attention, technology has been able to expand the world of journalism and spread news in a bigger and better way. However, despite the fact that journalism is going technological, a stable foundation of journalism is still essential to have.

The world of journalism is constantly changing, and advancements in technology helps enhance this world. From radio, television to the Ineternet, it's growth is rapidly changing. Although great importance have been placed on blogging, tweeting, or updating social networks or websites for current news, it is important to never forget the basic and fundamental building blocks of being a future journalist, which includes writing, great reporting, investigative, and reading skills. Like my peers have mentioned, it is vital that future journalists never fail to recognize the importance of great journalistic writing and reporting.

Kimmy said...

Journalism is perpetually changing and new ideas are forming. Technology has changed the ways in which journalism is portrayed. Journalism is now interpreted on how to spread the information, rather than how to write the information.

Wendy said...

The advancing of technology really changes journalist. This presentation shows how journalist should prepare themselves, such as learning new technologies, for the future news media. Improving their skills will always help them handling certain stories.

Unknown said...

There are many other types of media journalism is expressed now. The stories are now on the world wide web, but the required skill of writing is not evolving. Writers must still practice to improve their writing skills.

Teresa-Mae said...

I agree with this presentation to some extent. The idea that journalism is evolving with technology is valid and inevitable, and that was presented well in the powerpoint. I found some of the things that were in the slides a little off-putting (Hm, is that the correct word?). For instance:

"The future journalist is a community organizer, assembling and synthesizing people. Not just broadcasting them."
I don't understand this statement. A journalist's job is to broadcast news, not establish social communities.

Another (this one bothered me quite a bit):
"...finds and shares great content, within a beat or topic area... every time he makes an item, it's: helpful, useful, informative, entertaining, interesting, funny."
I find this completely absurd. A journalist's job is NOT to provide entertaining, interesting or funny stories. Journalists are supposed to broadcast helpful, informative and (ESPECIALLY) honest stories. "Entertaining" stories are one of the reasons why society is so uninformed.

Unknown said...

I agree with Teresa's comment that some points can be a little unnerving. Though, we can not doubt how society is today, and society is digitally aware.

If people are becoming more and more enraptured by entertaining news, all journalists can do is adapt and present the truth in the most entertaining or humorous way possible.

Going digital will still take time, considering how long we've been having print. For now, all we can do is ride the waves that come.

Unknown said...

Technology is making news more accessible, but it should not negatively affect the quality of journalism writing. Despite having webpages and podcasts, journalists still need the fundamental skills to report a strong story as well as the knowledge to correctly use digital media to their advantage. Technological advancements should enhance and expand the power of journalism.

BreNahNah said...

I agree with Stacy. Despite the changes journalistm must undergo, the basics remain the same. Journalists must be able to communicate effectivly and write an informative yet intersting piece. Whether it's in print or in cyberspace, the basic writing techniques of journalism will never change, however, journalists will. While their reporting methods remain the same, they will have to change their ways of spreading the information as new technology is created and used. They must incorporate the age-old basics with modern-technology.

Unknown said...

As the field of evolves, the methods of reporting and information gathering becomes more reliant on the latest social media and virtual access points. This is a positive advancement, and may make some types of journalism easier on reporters. However, no matter what, the basic fundamentals remain essential to all journalism no matter what approach.

Leah said...

Technology is becoming increasingly prominent in the world of journalism, leading away from print papers, towards a new more efficient way of delivering news. Journlism is constantly evolving and changing, and good journalists should be able to adapt to these new changes. The most significant aspect of journalism is the writing itself, so it is irrelevant whether it is printed, or posted online. It is important for readers to remember, however, it is about what you are reading, not where youre reading it.

Samson Tong said...

The world of journalism is being modernized fast. Everything is displayed and shown online, articles are written online. As technology progresses, rules and standards constantly change. Not only must the world of journalism stay united, but must evolve as technology does.

Chloe said...

Advances in technology call for journalists to explore and take advantage of their internet audience. It would thus be important for journalists to tone their digital media, etc., skills. Nevertheless, as many other students have stated, it is the foundation of journalism (writing and reporting) that remains of greatest importance. Therefore, although journalism is shifting to the internet, it is still important to practice good, basic writing skills.

Jennifer D said...

I agree with Brittany when she says that technology shouldn't affect the quality of writing and information that us journalists provide. With the technology advancements in society today, with social media, that should only be assisting the journalism field; the strong foundation base should still be present within the writing.

Andrew Gabriel said...

Just because journalism is shifting from type writrers of the past to the wireless keyboards of totady, does not remove the most imoportant element, the way you write. Writing still needs skill and whether it is on the Chronicle or a twitter acount, writing is still a skill that can only be learned through experience.

Yueming Wang said...

Journalism, like everything else, has definitely shifted from print to multimedia. However, I still think that the elements are the same -- the writing, the graphics, the layout, etc. Although they may seem very different, it is still necessary for journalists to excel in these categories.

lexxa said...

I agree with Rachel, that even though the journalism world is driving more towards digital, i doesn't change the stories or the importance of them. It saves paper, and it gets more people who are constantly on the internet to be constantly kept up with the news, rather than worrying to buy the paper everyday. Though i'm not disrespecting the original way at all.

Sabrina said...

Journalists need a strong foundation to ensure a better journalistic future. This is not to say that journalists will not make mistakes, because they will, but it is a a matter of learning from those mistakes. It reminds me of the quote, "In school, you're taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you're given a test that teaches you a a lesson."

I think most of these 37, possibly more by the time I get this comment published, comments are right. As the public begin to slowly shift into online media, journalism should grow and adapt to this situation. Yet, we should still maintain our foundations in print news media, in addition to a newer different online media.

Stephanie Chan said...

A basic foundation of journalism is still needed as Rachel explains. Journalists and the rest of the world can not help but put their luxuries and new inventions to use. Technology should come as a way to embrace and better a journalist's work. They should definitely use it when it is appropriate and deemed necessary.

Andrew said...

Journalism being on print is a tradition that should not be overlooked. This brings memory to the film "State of Play" because, on top of being a murder mystery, it was a satire on the "death of the paper". Although, times are changing and more people are buying computers, making it all the more easier to look online rather than reading it on a paper. The paper still has its benefits.

Eventhough journalism is continuously changing this presentation here helps us journalists realize how to utilize the media. It mentions the impirtance of knowing how to use the digital media and make sure that all the information is put out there. It also helps us to to use words, visuals, video, and interactive graphics to be able to spread out the news properly.

Technology is slowly taking over the news industry everyday. Blogs, television, social networks, and websites in general have become one of the most common places to obtain news. Does this mean people should only start studying about computers if they are interested in journalism, no because everyone neeeds a base of the orginal style of journalism. Doing live interviews, taking live notes, gathering information from other people, etc. Having a strong base is key to the success for any reporter current or not.

-goodshit said...

Everything has/needs a foundation. It's important to master the fundamentals because withought them journalism would crumble. However, I agree with the presentation, journalism is evolving and journalist should also be well-rounded with using all the new technology out there.

Technology is advancing quickly and journalist need to explore and find new ways to bring information to the internet. It is then important that we use the media--it digital counterparts--and all the skills necessary.Nevertheless, it is important to understand that reporting is reporting, regardless where printed. If news is shifting to the internet, we should therefore follow that trend.

The presentation made some thoughtful points about characteristics and behaviors journalists should possess and develop. What was dislikable, however, was the extreme emphasis it placed on journalism via the world wide Web. Of course, it is almost imperative for modern-day individuals to be familiar with what goes on online. It is such a bonus to expand one's boundaries to encompass the Internet. Digital media, however, is not the most important aspect of future journalism. Solid writing skills and impressive conversational abilities (for in-person - not online - interviews) are still the foundation of journalism. In essence, branching out to online medias is great, but if one is not so technologically savvy, their career as a journalist should not have to suffer.

Unknown said...

Fundamentals are always critical and there is no exception in journalism. News and information presented in a varity of formats and styles can create difference to the world. It's time to make a change while keeping the foundations.

Unknown said...

Patrice's comment made me laugh and i agree with it. Technology evolves with journalism. Whatever the next form of worldwide communication is(like the internet), journalism will most likely fin a way to be involved.

Unknown said...

As technology changes, we as journalist have to change as well. It may be for the better or for the worse. The society is changing from print to online sources. It is important for journalism to evolve into online sources as well. Its important for journalist to stick together and make the best of these situations.

Chris Habash said...

Technology is simply another change in life, in evolution. It shows the world is progressing, and with it, so does social media. Just like spears were replaced with guns, the internet will replace print. We need to embrace it, and like the gun, make it more efficient and powerful

Haley K. said...

I thoroughly agree with Fiona in terms of the evolution of journalism. While improvements in technology are vital for an up-to-date publication, the basics of a newspaper, like the fresh ink and paper and the personal feel of the newspaper, are all essential for the future of journalism.

Courtney Mariano said...

As technology evolves, journalists must adapt with the change in order to reach more people since it is becoming easier and faster for audiences to access the news through podcasts and web pages. I agree with Stacy that no matter what form the news is presented, the quality of journalism should remain the same.

We have to face reality in the sense that the times are changing and so is the technology. Our world is becoming more electronic and we have to cope with that. Journalism will not die out but I think prosper under this new art form.
