Do yearbooks have a future?

This is an interesting article from Oklahoma about the future of yearbooks. Our books are scheduled to arrive early next week and we sell to nearly 50% of our student population. The books are also requested by the city and two local libraries. With all of that said, our sales are still down significantly over the past two years.

A yearbook is the story of the school year in book form, so what is the future of the traditional yearbook? What makes you think so? Leave a thoughtful comment here. Due by the end of 5th period today.

Note: many of you know my opinion on this issue. Please don't regurgitate my opinion. What are YOUR thoughts on the future of yearbooks?

Yearbooks shouldn't be put on DVDs. Wtf. Its called a yearBOOK. Yeah, its cheaper and you can add music and video clips on it, but it just doesn't work. I know the media is changing, and I really hate how we might/have to change our BOOK in order to keep up. Its kind of like the Kindle for books, and I dont like it. I really dont see how changing the yearbook into something online/DVD is going to increase sales. I dont know.

Ok, so I'm really old-fashioned and I really just don't like the idea of the new technologically advanced yearbooks. Yearbooks are meant to be something that you keep for years and can look back on and share. It's a physical object that can be signed and written in and can be passed from person to person. These moments can't be achieved with a yearbook that's on a CD.

Yearbooks most likely won't be books anymore. However, I do think yearbooks are wonderful and should remain books. I don't know why people don't buy them. They are lame. Maybe one day they will be 3D as well. Or on iPads. I'm excited to see what kind of yearbooks my offspring will have.

It's almost the same as whether or not to keep hard copy books or whether to use a kindle. The fact of the matter is that technology is always improving. There are always going to be the next best thing and the old will become obsolete. But with tangible things like books, they are able to theoretically survive for hundreds of years. You don't need electricity to read a yearbook. That is why I think hard books should stay. Even if schools sell digital copies, it would be really easy to copy to other dvds. You can't do that with a real yearbook! Honestly, to answer the questions "Do yearbooks have a future?", people are never thinking about the future and are too caught up in the "now" so yearbooks won't last very long. It's a sad thing to say, and it doesn't make sense in the long run, but it'll happen because people think it's not worth it when it is. Sad, but true. >:|

We all are probably thinking the same thing; in the future yearbooks probably won't be books anymore.

I think the thought of this is pretty realistic, but it's just not right.

It's called a yearBOOK, not a yearDVD or yearIPHONEAPP.

It's hard to explain just how different it would be, but even if you can sign a digital "yearbook"
it's just is not the same.

It's like saying converting the Bible or something to a DVD

Yes, my sister and I believe the same thing. WTF. Some things just aren't meant to be tampered with. Yearbooks are one of these things. People still make a big deal out of regular All-American traditions like Prom and Homecoming and Powderpuff (although our school begs to differ..). There just has to be some new innovative way to get students to understand the intrinsic value of this annual book. Kids nowadays look towards technology and technology only. They gravitate towards the newest video games, websites and TV shows. A yearbook shows hundreds of pictures. And they say a single photograph is worth a thousand words. What's not to get? DVDs are out of the question. In a matter of ten years we have gone from cassette tapes to CDs to online downloads and from VHS to DVD to the recent Blu-Ray. If we change to DVDs now, eventually it will become more outdated. It will be a never-ending transition to the newest piece of technology. But with a book, we still read books, right?

As we progress into the future, our technology progresses as well. So books are getting a little old school and I think the way it will be presented will soon be on computers or something. Although it feels good to flip pages traditionally, we all know that it will soon be different.

a yearbook on DVD sounds stupid to me. it sounds like it would be bootleg (low quality or "garbage"). the best part of a yearbook to me is getting everyones signatures. im not gonna go up to someone and say "sign my DVD!!!".. thats just stupid. i agree with what rachel said, its called a yearBOOK.

Historically significant happenings have always been recorded in books and texts throughout centuries. For example, the Holy Bible is always kept in a book with words that narrate God and His miracles. The history of the United States are also stored in a collection of books. Similarly, yearbook, a book of memories and history, should be kept in a book for tangible collection. It is necessary to retain the traditional yearbook in order to hold on to memories even in the far future. Yearbooks have a future if they advance with the technology by incorporating new and updated digital features in the traditional book.

Yearbooks are memories of the year that can be kept over the years to share with others. A yearbook should be left in book form because of the many aspects that go in to the production of the book. You can still keep up with the technology of the future in book form such as 3D objects and extensions of the yearbook that are electronic but the book part is in its name and should be kept traditional.

I think it should say in book form. It wouldn't be the same just looking at some random clips of the school year. Its better to look at one captured moment. The sports video clips would be cool though. We could just include a dvd with the book (aside from the expenses).

Well i do agree that yearbook should be kept a book and not be a cd
but it is time to do something new with yearbooks instead of just pictures. Yearbooks should be 3-d that way they'll be more interesting and exciting and thats something you don't usually see when you open a yearbook, pictures popping out at you.
